Gulf of America Exhibit
Known as the Gulf of Mexico 1550-2025. Changed to Gulf of America (in the United States only) by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) in 2025
Explore an underwater oil rig in the Aquarium’s Gulf of America exhibit and meet the aquatic animals that thrive around its barnacled pilings. The quarter-scale replica of an offshore oil rig sits within the water of this exhibit.
Reigning as the largest exhibit in the Aquarium, the Gulf exhibit measures 17 feet deep and holds 400,000 gallons of man-made saltwater. It is packed with sharks, schools of fish, sting rays, and sea turtles—including King Mydas an endangered green sea turtle.
Why was the exhibit name changed?
The Gulf of Mexico’s name was changed to Gulf of America (in the United States only) by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) in 2025. The exhibit name was updated to reflect this change.
